• KKR has acquired over 10% of National Highways Infrastructure Trust (NHIT) units for Rs 2,905 crore ($322 million) from CPPIB and OTPP. This expands KKR's infrastructure investments in India, which already include other trusts, renewable energy firms, and a logistics company.
• NHIT is an infrastructure investment trust sponsored by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and was established to monetize assets and fund new highway construction. It represents KKR's third InvIT in India, alongside IndiGrid and Vertis.
• While both NHIT and Vertis operate in the highway sector, they are distinct and target different asset pools, with NHIT focusing on NHAI assets and Vertis acquiring from private entities. KKR has rapidly grown its highway portfolio through acquisitions since entering the sector in 2021.
• This NHIT investment follows KKR and OTPP's recent sale of units in Vertis, where KKR was previously the majority owner. KKR is also reportedly planning an IPO for Vertis.
