• CPPIB and OTPP sold 97.8 million units each in National Highways Infrastructure Trust (NHIT) on the open market for Rs 148.53 per unit. This transaction generated a total of Rs 2,905 crore ($322 million) for the two pension funds.
• Prior to this sale, both CPPIB and OTPP had invested in NHIT multiple times since 2021, with their most recent investment being Rs 4,160 crore in March of the current year. They had collectively invested Rs 11,520 crore and each held a 25% stake in the InvIT.
• The funds raised by NHIT, including the recent investment from CPPIB and OTPP, were used to acquire 11 additional road concessions across India. These acquisitions expanded NHIT's portfolio from 15 to 26 operating toll roads.
• NHIT was established by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in 2021 to monetize its assets and secure funding for new highway development. CPPIB and OTPP were anchor investors, each acquiring a 25% stake for just over Rs 6,000 crore.
